Vanguard - A Free2Play Shooter from the Control Developers

Remedy Entertainment, best known for its gripping singleplayer games like Max Payne, Alan Wake and Control, is set to release its first multiplayer game. As the developer announced, they have teamed up with Chinese publisher Tencent, who will be distributing the game.
This new project is thus the third game from Remedy Entertainment that is currently in development. At the same time, the studio is working on the singleplayer campaign of CrossfireX and on Alan Wake 2, the sequel to their much acclaimed action-adventure from 2010.

Remedy Entertainment released first details on what their new game might look like later on in a statement. Here you can find out about these first pieces of information.

Codename „Vanguard“

In the statement from the developer studio, the project was given the codename „Vanguard“, which will not be the title of the finished game. The shooter is said to be a free-2-play PvE game that can also be played in co-op mode. Remedy Entertainment wants to combine their strengths in storytelling with the experiences of a multiplayer shooter. According to their own statements, the studio has strengthened itself with numerous experts from the free-2-play sector.
A specific release date was not given by Remedy Entertainment. According to the press release, the game is currently in the proof-of-concept phase. Accordingly, they are already looking for a few employees who can support the project. The plan is to release it for PC and consoles, as well as a mobile version. Vanguard will be based on the Unreal Engine.

Collaboration with Tencent

For the project, Remedy Entertainment entered into a partnership with the Chinese publisher giant Tencent. This is justified by the spread in the international market, where Tencent is to support the game. The lucrative Asian market will play a particularly important role here.
Vanguard is the intellectual property of Remedy Entertainment and is being developed and distributed by the Finnish studio with the exception of selected Asian areas. Tencent will take over the remaining parts. The revenues for the respective markets will then be shared between the two parties. The budget is also co-financed by Tencent. The planned costs are at a similar level to other AAA games from Remedy Entertainment. Part of the agreement is also the licensing of the mobile version by Tencent. The Chinese developer will thus develop and distribute the game for mobile devices. Remedy Entertainment will receive an extra agreed fee for this.

Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy Entertainment, described the entry into the Games-as-a-Service market and the responsibility for distributing the game as the next logical step for the company. Virtala praised Tencent as the right partner to make the project successful on the international market.
