Vellum: A Colorful Roguelike Game with Ink-based Magic
Imagine the third-person action and co-op gameplay of Risk of Rain 2, combined with enchanting fantasy magic reminiscent of Magicka, Elden Ring, and The Elder Scrolls Skyrim, and you get Vellum, a new Steam roguelike with a distinct theme of ink-based magic. With over 300 powers and 100 upgrades and spells, Vellum looks like a fantastically versatile addition to the genre, and its short runs make it an easily accessible option for playing with friends.
Vellum is developed by Alvios Games, and its bold, colorful spells immediately jump off the metaphorical and literal pages in its new reveal trailer. Vellum is all about the ink that adorns the pages of your magical books.
The World of Vellum: Colorful Magic against Monochrome Monsters
Unlike your enemies, the Torn - monochromatic black and white monsters reminiscent of Destiny 2's Taken - who threaten to suck the colors out of the land, you and your fellow scribes hurl all kinds of brightly colored spells. In addition to creating your own unique builds, you can choose from over 300 powers and also receive group bonuses from The Font, which give you even more game-changing abilities.
Short but Intense Game Rounds
While the promise of "over 100 upgrades and spells, over 300 powers for you and your team, and colorful ultimate and signature powers that create over 70 loadout combinations" certainly sounds interesting, one of the most exciting points for me is the estimated runtime of only 30 minutes per game in Vellum.
As great as Risk of Rain 2 is, convincing a group of friends to play a game without a set duration that can easily turn into several hours is often a nearly impossible task. If Vellum can provide fun, eye-catching gameplay with interesting decisions that don't burden my entire evening, I'm totally up for it.
