Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader - A Dark CRPG in the 40K Universe - First Impressions from the Beta Phase

Since its first release, the Warhammer franchise has produced a variety of games in different genres. From strategy games to action-adventures, there is something for everyone. Now, Owlcat Games is taking on a new project and developing Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, the first CRPG set in the dark 40K universe.

Rogue Trader: Origins and Background

The concept of the Rogue Trader dates back to the first edition of Warhammer 40,000, which was subtitled "Rogue Trader" in 1987. As the game moved away from its RPG roots and focused on larger-scale warfare, the subtitle disappeared. However, the characters of the Rogue Trader continued to be developed and in 2009, they received their own tabletop role-playing game. This highlighted how they are connected to the Imperium of Mankind, or rather, how they can operate outside of its totalitarian rules.

First Impressions from the Beta

We had the opportunity to test a part of the game in the beta of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader that starts today. The prologue begins on an Imperial frigate, where you may become the heir to the Lord Captain of this ship. However, a mutiny breaks out and it is up to us to restore order.

Exploring the Koronus Expanse

Throughout the adventure, you explore the Koronus Expanse and can surround yourself with an unusual crew of characters. To support you, there are Tech-Priests, Navigators, and Space Marines - but even unauthorized Psykers and Aliens can be part of the crew. The Rogue Trader Charter practically gives you free reign to do what is necessary.

Turn-Based Combat

The combat in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is turn-based RPG combat on a square grid. Each character has the basic ability to move and attack once with the equipped weapon, in addition to action points for further abilities. There are also ultimate abilities that allow for particularly powerful attacks.

Interesting Aspects of the Game

  • Bullet penetration with firearms
  • Enormous size of Space Marines compared to other units
  • Interstellar travel and space combat

From what we've seen so far, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has the potential to become a defining and unique experience in the 40K universe. So stay tuned and follow the development of this promising CRPG!
