Watch Dogs Legion - Free update brings multiplayer

The digital watchdogs are on the loose again. In Watch Dogs Legion, publisher Ubisoft sends players to London to save the digital future of humanity. While the main game is a pure single player, a free online mode will be added as an update. But what can players expect from this mode and when can the battle begin?

Stronger together

If you have fought your way through digital London alone and are looking for new challenges, you can join the fray in an online co-op mode with up to three other players. The online mode is completely detached from the main game. So you don't have access to the weapons, skins and equipment you've already acquired in single player. There will also be no missions from the single player that can be completed online. For this, the online mode will have its own team missions in which you and your other Watch Dogs have to work together to achieve your goals in a given time.

If your troop needs additional reinforcement, you can also recruit NPCs for your fight. Unlike in single player, you don't have to fulfill any requirements or missions before the digital helpers come to your aid. If you can pay the price, every NPC will follow you immediately. This way you can put together your team completely individually.

Showdown

Watch Dogs Legion will also feature a PVP mode, but it won't be a traditional duel between player teams. Instead, there will be two different modes that you can turn on or off as needed. In the so-called Spider-Bot Arena, it's all about drone hunting. Four to eight players take control of a Spider-Bot each and zip through the streets of the city. The goal is to take out as many enemy drones as possible before your own bot runs out of life.

If that's not exciting enough for you, you can also play the classic invasion. This mode has been around since the first Watch Dogs and allows other players to invade your game world. The invaders have different tasks to fulfill. Sometimes they have to stay as close to you as possible to gather important data. Other times they go in for the bounty hunter frontal attack if you've attracted too much attention in the game. Your task is to find and disable the invaders. If the frequent invasions bother you, the online mode can be turned off at any time.

When will the multiplayer fun start?

It will take a little while longer before you can get online reinforcements for the liberation of London. While Watch Dogs Legion will be released on October 29, the online features will not be available until December 3 as a free update. Ubisoft has also announced that further updates are planned for 2021, which will provide new missions and storylines, among other things.

However, not all players can jump into the cyber war right away. Because of its explicit content and violence, the game will be rated 18+. So younger players will have to wait until they are of age before they can try out Ubisoft's new adventure.
