Winter Survival is a brutally realistic new survival game on Steam that puts you up against the harsh wilderness of cold, frostbitten lands. From "Sons of the Forest" and "Rust" to "Ark" and "Valheim," there's something fascinating about games that give you the feeling of surviving against all odds. Few things are as threatening as nature itself, and following in the deep ocean depths of Subnautica and in the frozen footsteps of The Long Dark and Frostpunk comes Winter Survival, an aptly named new Steam game that puts you up against the frostbitten wilderness.
Winter Survival comes from developer Drago Entertainment and envisions "what was supposed to be a nice winter hike in Mount Washington State Park" turning into a terrible, harsh fight for survival. This brutally realistic survival game forces you to consider your body temperature, physical and mental exhaustion, as well as your hunger and thirst, as you battle against the elements.
Mental Challenges and Real Threats
At the forefront of Winter Survival's systems is the mental state of your character. "In reality, your mind becomes a problem much earlier than hunger," explains Drago Entertainment.
Naturally, some threats are very real and present. These include deadly animals like wolves and bears, and while you can certainly prepare weapons, torches, traps, and other tools to defend against potential predators, in many cases, it is better to avoid or escape a dangerous confrontation rather than engage in a fight directly. You will also be able to build shelters, campfires, and more to withstand the cold and wildlife.
Three Different Game Modes
Winter Survival offers three different game modes. The Story Mode is the core experience with a narrative focus, Coldwave pushes the survival elements to the maximum with constantly changing weather to see how long you can survive, and the Endless Mode is a more freeform sandbox game mode that gives you access to more resources and crafting options.
Early Access and Playtesting
Winter Survival is set to launch on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, through Steam Early Access. You can add it to your wishlist now. However, if you want to play it even earlier, Drago Games is currently accepting sign-ups for "a limited number of playtesters" to try out Winter Survival before its release in Early Access.
