Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus - Curse or Blessing for Gamers? - Why Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus Might Not Be the Future of Gaming After All

Game Pass and PS Plus - Not the Expected Killer App

When Microsoft introduced the Xbox Game Pass, it was touted as the ultimate solution for gamers. However, after some time, it appears that it may not live up to its promises. Not only because, despite access to numerous games, there is hardly enough time to play them all, but also because the traditional sale of AAA games continues to thrive.

Similar to TV subscriptions, it turns out that players prefer to use their free time to play the latest game hits, rather than limiting themselves to the offerings of the Xbox Game Pass or PS Plus. Additionally, the Game Pass is becoming more expensive and is no longer the unbeatable deal it once was. But what is the reason for this?

Subscription Sales Declining?

Industry analyst Mat Piscatella reports that subscription sales for Game Pass and PS Plus have hit a snag. However, it is also evident that the sales of AAA games have been exceptionally good in 2023. This suggests that gamers are still willing to pay for high-quality games rather than relying on monthly subscriptions that may not always offer the desired games.

Microsoft's Role in the Subscription Landscape

Microsoft has always been a big proponent of subscription services and has tried to create a central platform for gamers with the Xbox Game Pass. However, it seems that the biggest test for the Game Pass has yet to come. The upcoming game Starfield could be that challenge and will show whether the subscription concept is truly sustainable or just a short-term trend.

The Future of Xbox Game Pass

Although the Xbox Game Pass undoubtedly offers an impressive selection of games and is an attractive offer for many gamers, it remains to be seen whether it can truly change the future of gaming. While some players appreciate the Game Pass and use it regularly, others still prefer to buy their favorite games individually and not be tied to monthly costs.

Conclusion: Is Xbox Game Pass the Future of Gaming?

It is difficult to give a definitive answer as to whether the Xbox Game Pass and similar offerings like PS Plus are the future of gaming. While they certainly offer benefits and may be attractive to some players, the strong performance of AAA games in traditional sales shows that interest in individual purchases still exists.

For Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus, it remains a challenge to compete with traditional game sales while maintaining an appealing offer for gamers. Whether they can establish themselves as a permanent fixture in the gaming industry in the long run remains to be seen.
